It was bound to happen. As much as we love our Insight user client, we had to concede that there may actually be functions that the Insight client is not perfectly suited to support.
This confession in no way diminishes the power of Insight. Rather, it serves as a springboard into more flexibility for Insight customers. To that end, we added a query API with our recent release of Adobe Insight 5.4.
For some this new API will help with general data portability. For others, it will help to automate important, data-driven business processes. From our perspective, this move is the manifestation of an emerging strategy which – when leveraged fully – will translate to better information for your business, better customer and third-party innovation and new agile options for analytics.
The mechanics of the API is far from rocket science. A client sends an HTTP request to the Insight server. In most cases, the body of the request consists of text written in a documented Insight Query Language. Users not familiar with HTTP can leverage a sample client for Perl requests.
Most Insight customers have system configurations containing multiple DPUs (data processing servers) in a single cluster; however, API calls can be made to a single DPU and query results will be automatically pull from all DPUs in a cluster. Query flexibility includes almost everything you can get from within the Insight client.
In conjunction with the announcement of this new API, the Omniture Developer Connection has added a new forum specific to Insight. We encourage you to leverage this community to share ideas and even scripts to get the most of the Insight API.
