Disabling Microsoft Outlook Third Party Plugins

Problem:

Microsoft Outlook supports third party plugins (aka add-ins) to allow for such things as email virus scanning. Such plugins can cause problems, such as causing Outlook to time-out when trying to retrieve new email.

Solution:

To see whether plugins are the problem, launch Microsoft Outlook while holding down the Ctrl key. Outlook will then startup in safe mode without loading any third-party add-ins.

One place to permanently disable such plugins in Outlook is to go to Tools > Options Other > Advanced Options > COM Add-Ins, or Add-In Manager.
