Tips of the Trade
See if CDs are Right for Your Portfolio

Certificates of Deposit (CDs) are debt instruments issued by commercial banks and savings and loan institutions. When you invest in these, you loan the bank a set amount of money, and your loan is insured by the FDIC. For the use of your money, you're promised the return of your principal payment, plus interest over the life of a CD. To learn more about the types of CDs offered through Scottrade, click to read CD & Bond Trading.

Spot Trends with New Technical Indicators in Scottrader® Streaming Quotes

Spot market trends in new ways with five additional technical indicators now available to you in Scottrader® Streaming Quotes: Average Directional Movement Index (ADX), Average Directional Movement Index Rating (ADXR), Aroon, Aroon Oscillator and RSI.

To add these indicators to your charts in Scottrader® Streaming Quotes, click Chart from the main menu bar. With your Chart window open, click the Indicators button on the far right. The new indicators are available in the drop-down menus for Upper Indicators and Lower Indicators.

Average Directional Movement Index (ADX)

The Average Directional Movement Index (ADX) measures a market trend's strength (but not whether the trend is bullish or bearish) using values between 0 and 100.

Low readings are generally associated with weak trends or trading ranges, while higher readings are usually seen in strong uptrends or downtrends. Analysts apply the ADX to spot trends that are gaining momentum or weakening. For example, if the ADX value begins moving higher from below 20, the current up or downtrend may be gaining momentum. Similarly, if ADX turns down from a high reading the uptrend or downtrend may be weakening.

The ADX is also available as an indicator in ScottradeELITE®.

Average Directional Movement Index Rating (ADXR)

The Average Directional Movement Index Rating (ADXR) also identifies strengthening or weakening trends using values of 0 to 100. It's calculated by averaging the current ADX and the ADX from one time period before (typically 14 days, although you can customize the time period).

Because the ADXR represents an average of ADX, its values don't fluctuate as drastically as the ADX, so some analysts believe it's a more accurate sign of trends in volatile markets.

The ADXR is also available as an indicator in ScottradeELITE®.

Aroon

Aroon is a two-line indicator: The Aroon Up line measures the strength of an uptrend, and the Aroon Down line measures the strength of a downtrend, both using values between 0 and 100.

When the Aroon Up line is above the Aroon Down line, the security's price is moving upward. When the down line is above the up, the price is dropping. High readings for the up line mean the security is trading at new highs for the period you've chosen; high readings for the down line mean it's trading at new lows for the period.

Aroon Oscillator

The Aroon Oscillator subtracts the Aroon Down value from the Aroon Up value, and traders look for the two lines to cross above or below the zero line as a sign of a potential emerging trend upward or downward. Readings above zero indicate an uptrend, while readings below zero indicate a downtrend.

Relative Strength Index (RSI)

Please note that the indicator formerly known as “RSI” has been renamed to “RSI Wilder,” and a new RSI indicator is now available to you as well.

Traders generally use RSI to determine whether a stock or index is overbought or oversold, with RSI values falling in a range of 0 to 100. Although the common default time period for RSI is 14 days, you can set the time period yourself, and short-term traders are known to use periods as short as two days.

The difference between the RSI Wilder and RSI indicators is that RSI Wilder uses a form of exponential averaging that smoothes the data, while RSI uses a simple average of the up and down closes.
