Confessions of a Scottrade Product Developer

By Oscar P., Sr. Product Analyst and Guest Blogger

I am sure you have all had mornings where you have logged into your Scottrade account, started looking over your investments, read what happened in the markets overnight and thought to yourself - I wish Scottrade would change this or fix that.

Or, maybe there have been moments where that first cup of freshly brewed coffee sparked an idea and you thought, wouldn’t it be cool if Scottrade could create a new feature for my watch list or a way for me to test different trading and investing strategies?

Well, I have to confess we love hearing your thoughts and ideas. And, in all honesty, your feedback led to the release of the new Quick Trade tool bar and enhancements to the Positions page.

Having your feedback from beginning to end was motivating for everyone involved. We made hundreds of adjustments during the life of the project (nearly a year in the making), but with each change or iteration it allowed us to not only continually keep your expectations at top of mind, but made sure we got it right.

For instance, I remember when we initially tested and introduced the Quick Trade tool bar. In our original design you could customize what three indices you wanted to appear in the trading tool bar. However, after user feedback we learned that you preferred that the Quick Trade tool bar had the capability to enter up to three symbols, not just indices. It was a terrific suggestion and our team changed gears with the next iteration to make sure three symbols could also be entered.

Your feedback also helped us identify improvements that needed to be made to the Positions page. Many of you commented that you really liked the new Ratings & Reports tab, historical price information, and dividend income information, but you wanted the data to expand beyond the initial set screen boundaries to allow for better viewing and analysis. Again, we didn’t originally consider this idea when designing the Position page, but realized it was a great idea and incorporated into the next release.

Even though we went back to the drawing board a couple of times, it was impressive to see with each new adjustment, the passion for the new features extend beyond our team to all of you, who take pleasure in using them to place a trade or find out what to invest in now.

We hope you continue sending us feedback through your branch, on Twitter, in the Scottrade® Online Community, or even on Facebook like the messages below (which we are considering).

If you haven’t checked out the updates to the Positions page or the new Quick Trade bar, please do. I’d love to hear your thoughts on what you want to see from us in the future.

How have you used the Quick Trade tool bar or enhancements to the Positions page to help you with your trading and investing strategies?

Hi Jay,

This is great feedback for us, and we like your recommendation about improving the versus purchase and breaking out position lots on the Positions page. The good news is that we have a project in place that is going to allow clients to elect lots to sell at the point of order entry. It has not been determined when that will be implemented, but I can tell you improvements are coming.

Having the ability to break out positions lots on the Positions page is something that we are seriously considering as a future enhancement. I appreciate your comment, because we are continually looking for ways to improve the functionality.

Feel free to post another blog comment if you have more feedback.

Best,
Oscar P.

There is one change to POSITIONS window that MUST be made. If multiple buys are made of the same stock, they Must be listed separately. Now they are combined with an average cost.
This has to be done so I can click the specific lot I want to sell instead of going through the lengthy and time consuming Versus purchase procedure. I trade every day and I do not have time to do that. This issue is causing a lot of friction between me and ST.
You're welcome to email or call to discuss.
