More Than an Internship

By Kristen S., Branch Intern and Guest Blogger

Though I’m not necessarily certain of what my eventual career aspirations will be, I know I want to ultimately work someplace where my hard -work will be valued, my ideas will be thoughtfully received, and my happiness at work is regarded with sizable significance. From my experience, Scottrade has proven to be such a place.

Getting the Job
I found the internship at a Scottrade branch on one of the job databases I have access to through my university. A few weeks after applying online through Scottrade Careers, I received a call requesting to set up a phone interview. I was thrilled at the prospect, but nervous nonetheless. I spent the next several days learning as much as I could about Scottrade and the internship.

During the interview the intern recruiter asked me a series of questions about my past work experience, reasons for wanting the internship and my customer service experience.

Shortly thereafter I was contacted to interview again, in-person, with the Arlington, Va. branch office manager. Needless to say the face-to-face interview went great and I ended up accepting the offer to work at Scottrade as a branch intern. I have not looked back.

Working as a Branch Intern
When I started the internship, to my surprise and relief I discovered that I would not simply be filling the coffee pot. I have had the opportunity to expand my knowledge of the finance industry, learn about the inner-workings of Scottrade and receive training on how to provide excellent customer service to our clients. I have even had the opportunity to write blog posts for our company and take advantage of self-selected “Intern Learning Topics” that helped me better understand the financial services industry.

Last winter, I reaped another benefit of being a Scottrade branch intern by participating in the Intern Exchange Program. Through the program I was given the opportunity to work during my winter break at another Scottrade branch, located approximately 15 minutes from my childhood home in southern New Jersey. The uniformity of Scottrade’s branch system and the universally high level of customer service our associates provide allowed me to jump right into my role at the branch and reminded me what a great job Scottrade does of creating seamless, positive experiences for our clients and interns. The experience was very fulfilling.

It’s for these reasons (and countless others) that I am ecstatic to be afforded the opportunity to continue working and growing at Scottrade upon my graduation later this month. I’m with Scottrade because of its internship program!

Did you ever have the opportunity to participate in an internship, and if so, what was your experience like?
