Tips of the Trade
See Quotes Quicker

In the new Quick Trade bar, you can choose to see updated quotes every five seconds. On the right, select the button that looks like an 'a' with arrows circling it. Selecting it will turn the 5-second auto refresh on and off. That way, you can react even quicker to market opportunities.

Personalize Your Investing Experience

Scottrader® Streaming Quotes offers up to three different layouts that can be personalized to match your trading interests. To create a layout, start at the Scottrader Quote Grid. Then, open all the windows you want to include in your layout using the buttons at the top of the Quote Grid window. Assign a location to each window, and then click Save This Layout in the bottom left corner. From the Save Layout box, you can choose to save your settings as Layout 1, Layout 2 or Layout 3.

Toggle Between Your Accounts

In Scottrade OptionsFirst, you can easily toggle back and forth between your accounts on any screen. In the top right corner, select the Manage Accounts button. The pop-up box will auto populate your different accounts. Select the circle next to the one you want to open, then click the Change Account button.

Grow Your Savings Slowly and Steadily

By Jim Rubera, Scottrade Branch Manager, North Andover, Mass.

Retirement planning and college savings can be overwhelming at times. A lot of people may look at the yearly contribution limits of $5,000 or $2,000 and think, "I can't do that; it's too much." Two important things to keep in mind are that those figures represent the maximum contribution allowed, and that you don't have to do it all at once. For the everyday person who can't write a check for thousands of dollars at a time, a much more practical and economically responsible way to save can be in small periodic increments. If you have a Scottrade Traditional IRA, Roth IRA or a Coverdell Education Savings Account, you may set up weekly, monthly or quarterly recurring contributions directly from your bank account.

A simple way to begin is to look at your income and decide what small amount you can afford to put away. Again, keep in mind that it doesn't have to be a large dollar figure. The idea is to come up with an amount that gets put away each time period that you are comfortable with. As little as $25 per week results in $1,300 in savings for an entire year. This can also save you the trouble of remembering to set aside money each pay period. Once these contributions are initiated, your account will grow automatically.

You can initiate recurring contributions by linking your external bank account using Money Direct. If you already have an active Money Direct link, skip down to the next set of instructions.

  1. Click on the My Account tab.
  2. Click on Deposits on the left-hand side of the page.
  3. Click the purple button Make a Deposit.
  4. Under "Add Transfer Account" choose the type of bank account you would like to link to (checking or savings) and click Continue.
  5. Enter your bank's information and follow the on screen instructions for verification. If you have trouble during the setup or verification process, please refer to the Scottrade educational video for a detailed walk-through.

Once your external bank account has been verified through the Money Direct service you may set up a recurring deposit/contribution.

  1. Return to Money Direct by following steps 1 through 3 above.
  2. Click on the tab Make an ACH Deposit.
  3. Select the sending bank and the receiving Scottrade IRA account number.
  4. Choose the year of contribution by clicking the Schedule for dropdown.
  5. Enter the Amount of each recurring contribution.
  6. Choose Recurring on the Frequency dropdown.
  7. Choose how often you would like the contribution to occur under the Repeat deposit dropdown.
  8. Choose a start and end date, then click Continue.
  9. Confirm the contribution details on the final screen and click Submit Deposit.

It is good practice to evaluate your contribution amount over time. As circumstances change, such as your salary increases, you may find you can increase the amount you set aside.
