GRAFTON, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 30, 2013--
Illinois American Water President Karla Olson Teasley today announced the company's acquisition of the City of Grafton water system, near Alton in Southern Illinois. The purchase of the system adds approximately 400 customers to the company's customer base in the Alton District and serves a population of nearly 600 residents.

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), announced today that it has closed three acquisitions and purchased the assets of water and wastewater systems serving a combined total of approximately 2,100 people. The total transaction amount of the newly acquired systems is approximately $6.9 million.

American Water Works Company, Inc. (American Water) is a water and wastewater utility company. American Water provides drinking water, wastewater and other water related services to an estimated 15 million people in more than 30 states and in two Canadian provinces. The Company operates in two segments: the Regulated Businesses and the Market-Based Operations. During the year ended December 31, 2011, its Regulated Businesses segment accounted for 88.8% of its total consolidated operating revenue. During 2011, its Market-Based Operations segment accounted for 12.3% of total consolidated operating revenue. In March 2013, the Company announced the acquisition of two water systems in northeast Pennsylvania. In June 2013, Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water Works Company Inc, announced the acquisition of a municipal wastewater system in Beaver County in western Pennsylvania.
