NSS operating income for the 2013 third quarter of $26 million increased by $11 million, or 73%, compared to the 2012 third quarter. Operating margin increased by 380 basis points to 8.0%. Operating margin increased by: (1) 180 basis points due to 2012 third quarter charges of $4 million for an inventory write-down of security and safety equipment and legal fees of $2 million related to a supplier dispute that did not recur, (2) 170 basis points primarily due to lower operating costs, and (3) 30 basis points due to the timing of award fees for IT support services.
L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (L-3 Holdings) is a prime contractor in Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C3ISR) systems, aircraft modernization and maintenance, and government services. It is also a provider of a range of electronic systems used on military and commercial platforms. Its customers include the United States Department of Defense and its prime contractors, United States Government intelligence agencies, the United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Department of State, United States Department of Justice, and allied foreign governments, domestic and foreign commercial customers. It operates in four segments: C3ISR, Government Services, Aircraft Modernization and Maintenance and Electronic Systems. On February 6, 2012, it acquired Kollmorgen Electro-Optical unit of Danaher Corporation. On August 6, 2012, it acquired Thales Training & Simulation Ltd's civil aircraft simulation and training business.
