GameTrailers Officially Closing Down Pages PREV 1 . . . 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18
The website won't be shut down for awhile. There's simply no need to for the time being.
Hello people! While the forums are still up, I feel like we would all benefit from this Quick read. That is all. Enjoy.
The fuck was that 0_0 | |
Forums are still up, but people are already gone.
Thanks. As someone who is watching the show, I approve. Though, I had to be sneaky while reading this at work. Its so dumb, but I guess its not even meant as a joke.
Shame, this place played a big part of my youth. Nothing lasts forever i guess.
it seems gametrailers former staff have an announcement for 3.21.2016.

^The fire rises! | |
Nice | |
Well, we can learn from it and continue a better site template. The arbitrary maintenance, lack of direction and slow evolution killed the site. Many ideas where great like factions and blogs but others where too infantile like 'GTD', mod selection and leveling. The site could continue elsewhere fixing those mistakes.
I'll follow Huber anywhere.
This seems like potentially great news. Maybe a YouTube channel or smaller scale website. I don't think they'll build anticipation just to announce they will be going seperate directions.
Well a number of things you've mentioned can be linked in large part to the rise of Ad block. Which according to Shane, slashed GT's entire profit margin of 30%, to just breaking even. And killed the Bonus Round. Its a miracle the site was able to survive this long. As permanently losing your entire profit margin could kill any company.
And I blame my use of adblock on viacom, every viacom website I used put so much emphisis on making sure that ads worked and not the site, to the point where ads consistently BROKE the site..... I really hated having to download adblock for Gametrailers and Comedy Central, but the sites did not function without their use.
Viacom fucked this site pretty good up to the point of closure. The problem was the intense procrastination of solving issues and evolving. Blogs, factions and a good set of rules could fix the forum. Youtube and the inability to reinvent placed the last nails in GT's coffin. This site could be ported and continued elsewhere. Adblock was a reaction to the constant spamming of adds. The other problem is mod selection. The administration should select mature intelligent adults for moderation and add ignore or mute functions to users. It will keep a clean atmosphere without arbitrary modding. GT forums may work if maintenance is consistent. The lack of evolution and slow progress harmed the site too much. But the killing blow was the constant strip of good features like blogs and factions. This should be taken as a good opportunity to learn and improve.
I wouldn't say the killing blow was the removing of factions and blogs. That happened 4-5 years ago. The most recent killing blow was releasing an unfinished and dysfunctional new website, the week the staff went on a holiday vacation. Scaring off a chunk of the remaining user base. And it did not help how much of a chore it was to get your account back. Because the email verification system was busted. Activity since that week in November plummeted to new lows, and never recovered according to Alexa traffic charts. But regardless, this site is largely a ghost town. And the only thing to look forward to now regarding GT is whatever the GT crew is planning. Looking at Brandon Jones twitter, an image of a couple of staff member avatars indicates they are likely planning something together.
| |
That too. The intention was to kill the site. As you see, industries are here for money, not the fans of the website. Since this idea stopped making money the obvious was to shut it down. Simple.
I wouldn't go that far. The site was making enough money to keep a dozen or so people employed, and filled corporate pockets well enough to keep Defy happy. The redesign and relocating to better office space prior to the shutdown certainly cost some money to do as well.
In my honest opinion GT was a temporary idea, it was ill conceived. GT forgot to make associations with youtube or make enough efforts to stay with the times. GT was destined to die due to miss management issues.
Hopefully the execution of whatever's next goes better than what you mentioned above, which I agree with.
Well were just a week away to finding out what that image means. It does seem like something good for a statement like "Every Dream has come True".
It's happening! Can't wait to see what they will announce next week.
If it's a YouTube channel I'll subscribe in an instant. As long as I get to hear more of Brandon's sexy voice.
Ex-GameTrailers staff announce new project EasyAllies (neogaf link) luckily neogaf formatting is similar to gametrailers so I can just quote the post from there here :P

Guys over at the escapist, say their layoff staff play around with the site code in retaliation for being layed off. By giving away publisher club memberships. Doesn't seem like anyone is gonna revoke them at this point. So enjoy the larger avatar uploads and custom title. Editable from the forum and notification option on your profile page.
