Password Security

One of the most important steps towards keeping your information safe is to create a password that is difficult to guess.

  • Do not use a predictable password. Avoid using nicknames, birthdates, anniversary date, or pet names.
  • Mix capital and lower case letters (Scottrade passwords are case sensitive).
  • Include letters, numbers, and punctuation marks.
  • Create a unique acronym to serve as your password, such as $taySaf3.
  • Do not use keyboard patterns (asdf) or sequential numbers (1234).
  • Never tell your password to anyone- this includes account aggregation services that consolidate and display all of your financial information in one place or services that collect your account number and password to perform transactions on your behalf.
  • Never write down or email your password.
  • Never email your password to anyone.
  • Periodically change your password.
  • Do not use words found in the dictionary. Hackers can use programs that try to crack your password.
