Biking the Distance To Do What’s Right

By Elsa H., Senior Technical Writer and Guest Blogger

In late June, five of Scottrade’s IT associates left their cars parked in their driveways, strapped on helmets and pedaled to our Westmoor business operations facility for Colorado’s annual Bike to Work Day. Taking part in this year’s event was quite a feat. The brave and athletic souls who participated rode a combined total of 72 miles and battled not only record-setting heat, but also smoke from nearby wildfires – something that I found downright awe-inspiring. Just take a look at what they accomplished before they put in a full day’s work:

Length of ride (one way) – distance and time:

  • Fred E., database developer: 14.4 miles, 70 minutes
  • Howard R., senior back office developer: 22.3 miles, 82 minutes
  • Rocky S., application development manager: 11.4 miles, 60 minutes
  • Terry B., senior back office developer: 14.4 miles, 70 minutes
  • Val R., back office developer: 10 miles, 60 minutes

“Cycling is one of my favorite recreational activities,” said Terry B. “When you consider the health benefits, both physical and mental, along with the positive environmental impact of opting to take the bike instead of the car – it’s a win-win situation.”

I couldn’t agree more with Terry. There are so many great reasons to bike to work, and it’s rather remarkable to have the company you work for truly value activities that support your health and well-being. In fact, as an associate, if I wanted to buy a bike, become a member at a fitness center or join a weight loss program like WeightWatchersTM, I could get a significant portion reimbursed through Scottrade’s annual Wellness Reimbursement. In my opinion, it’s a benefit that makes being healthy more affordable. How many companies do you know that offer employee gym discounts and reimbursements to cover fitness-related expenses? That in itself is a great example of how Scottrade cares about its associates and is committed to its corporate philosophy of doing what’s right.
