Howard Dean and Joan Walsh recently called out Fox News, criticizing what they called its "racist" handling of the deceptively edited Shirley Sherrod video clip. Indeed, Fox News and its personalities have a long history of aggressive race-baiting and racially charged commentary.

The release of the Sarah Palin emails has provoked a backlash from grassroots conservatives accusing major US newspapers and the Guardian of engaging in a vendetta against the former Alaska governor and possible presidential candidate.

More than 24,000 emails from her time as governor were made public on Friday under freedom of information.

Conservatives bombarded newspapers, rightwing websites and other media outlets with complaints that Palin had been singled out for special treatment and that other politicians were not being subjected to the same level of scrutiny, in particular Barack Obama.

Greta Van Susteren, a Fox News journalist and one of the few members of the media trusted by Palin, labelled the treatment of Palin "a media colonoscopy" and suggested some news organisations were on "a mission to destroy".

No doubt 30 Rock’s Tina Fey does a great impression of Sarah Palin. But surely she’s not such a dead ringer for the former Alaska governor and current One Nation bus touring non-candidate that she’d ever be confused for the real thing in a news story–and if, somehow, she was, you can bet it wouldn’t happen at Fox. I mean, she works there, so you’d assume they have a pretty good idea what the lady looks like. Right? Um, right?

According to the May Nielson ratings, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart beat the entire Fox News network in terms of total viewers.

This is a sizable collection of misstatements and bloopers for a 30-minute interview. You could say it is almost Newt-sized.

A New York Magazine article has blown the lid off the problems at Fox News, and exposed why Sarah Palin will never be the darling of Fox News.

The New York Magazine piece quoted a Republican who is close to Roger Ailes as saying, “Roger is worried about the future of the country. He thinks the election of Obama is a disaster. He thinks Palin is an idiot. He thinks she’s stupid. He helped boost her up. People like Sarah Palin haven’t elevated the conservative movement.”

The circus Roger Ailes created at Fox News made his network $900 million last year. But it may have lost him something more important: the next election.

“That’s a great question,” Palin said. “I think my problem is that I do have the fire in my belly. I am so adamantly supportive of the good traditional things about America and our free enterprise system and I want to make sure America is put back on the right track and we will do that by defeating Obama in 2012. I have that fire in my belly.”

Fox News, amplifying a fake controversy started by the Daily Caller, is claiming that 38 health-care reform "waivers" granted to businesses in Northern California are evidence of Rep. Nancy Pelosi and President Obama's "corruption." But the business owner who actually requested the waivers said that they were in no way connected to Pelosi and were part of an annual request for businesses throughout the country, not just in Pelosi's congressional district.

In reality, of course, there has been a sharp decline in border crossings in recent years, particularly as the U.S. economy his spiraled downward in a recession and unemployment has skyrocketed. But then, reality has never stopped people like Crowley from misreporting fake "facts" on Fox. It's a feature, not a bug.

Look, we'll never, NEVER be able to have an honest conversation with right-wingers about immigration, because they refuse to argue it honestly. Their recent tactic has been to demand that "first we secure the border, then we can talk reform." And then when all their demands are met, they just keep changing the goalposts. And then when they get called out on that, they claim we're just being unfair and uncivil.

Screw that. It's time to figure out how to move on without them.

Fox News demonstrated yet again tonight that, despite its protests to the contrary, there is no real difference between its supposedly "straight news" programming and its opinion programming.

During tonight's segment of Special Report with Bret Baier, guest host Chris Wallace devoted an entire segment to Democrats' supposeduse of "scare tactics" over Paul Ryan's attempts to reform Medicare, a talking point that Fox News opinion show Fox & Friends has previously pushed.

On Fox Business' Follow the Money, Penny Lee claimed that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) is a "frozen wasteland" and that "we should be drilling there." But neither Lee nor host Eric Bolling disclosed the fact that one of Lee's lobbying clients is a corporation that holds millions of acres of potential oil lands in Alaska including land located near ANWR.

Following President Obama's statement calling for lawmakers to set aside their differences and "harness" the "same sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11" to "confront the many challenges that we still face," right-wing media figures rejected the call, with Fox News' Laura Ingraham suggesting it was a "political" ploy and a "trap." In 2003, however, Ingraham repeatedly attacked progressives for supposedly "eroding our national unity."

No, it was never possible. Republicans are responding to this the way they respond to everything: by seeking to divide America and undermine Democrats and liberals. They do this for the same reason the scorpion stings the frog in the fable: it's their nature. They will continue trying to divide America until we wake up and realize that they hate America -- or at least they hate any America in which we don't turn over all the power to them. They'll undermine and weaken that pluralistic America until we finally recognize their disloyalty and marginalize the dividers.

Despite the late hour in the East, President Obama's speech on Sunday announcing the death of Osama bin Laden had an audience of 56.5 million viewers.

Andrew Napolitano, host of Fox Business' Freedom Watch and a 9/11 conspiracy theorist, used his first show after the announcement of Osama bin Laden's death to raise questions about whether the government is "telling us the truth or pulling a fast one to save Obama's lousy presidency." He also asked a guest, "Do you believe he's dead, or do you want some more evidence? A photograph, a testimony of an eyewitness? Something other than the words of a president whose words we have doubted before?"

Fox & Friends Saturday recently claimed that Republican Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels will sign a bill that "strip[s] Planned Parenthood of government funding for abortions." In fact, Indiana and federal law already prohibit federal Medicaid funds from paying for abortions except in cases of rape, incest, or a threat to the life of a pregnant woman, and the bill will actually cut off government funding for Planned Parenthood of Indiana (PPIN) to provide basic women's health and birth control services.

You’ve heard of a “staw man” argument, but this is ridiculous. In a Fox Business broadcast, libertarian opinion host John Stossel hosted Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) in a fake debate with a pretty lousy Obama impersonator.  

Now that denial isn't much of an option, the anger stage has kicked in: Birtherism has given way to fear-of-a-virile-black-man-ism. If you navigated last night to the front page of Fox Nation, a Fox News-run website, you'd have found this lead story, splashed with a grainy photo of Barack Obama Sr.: "'A Slippery Character': New Details Emerge About Obama's Father." What follows is a roughly 1,100-word hatchet job, offering few actual new details, to confirm what President Obama had already stated in his memoir: His dad wasn't the greatest of guys. But it's all in how the article conveys that message:

Christian evangelical leader Franklin Graham on Monday suggested that President Obama might not have been born in the United States. Graham, the son of evangelical leader Billy Graham stated, “I was born in a hospital in Asheville, North Carolina, and I know that my records are there. You can probably even go and find out what room my mother was in when I was born. I don’t know why he can’t produce that,” Graham said in remarks broadcast on Sunday.”

As Glenn Beck's Fox News program comes to end, the conspiracy-obsessed host is a pulling all the strings to make his last shows as entertaining as possible.

Rupert Murdoch's news empire has made it their mission to destroy NBC. In addition to castigating people like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow, they aimed their vitriol at the executive suites. Bill O'Reilly famously called GE's CEO Jeffrey Immelt "a despicable human being." Meanwhile, Murdoch's New York Post trades in gossipy articles about Olbermann's mental health and even published his home address, a despicable act whose only purpose was to incite acts of violence.

That makes it all the more curious that Fox News has not said a single derogatory word about Donald Trump's affiliation with NBC. Does Fox know that "The Apprentice" is an NBC program? This fact seems to have evaded their attention entirely. After so many years of lambasting NBC as a bastion of liberal propaganda, why do they suddenly have no complaints? In fact, why aren't they praising NBC for employing one of their favorite conservative prospects for the GOP nomination for president?

Bill O'Reilly distorted Rep. Paul Ryan's (R-WI) proposal to lower income tax rates for the wealthiest Americans, claiming that Ryan "stated he simply wants to keep the tax rate where it is." In fact, Ryan has proposed cutting the tax rate on upper income levels from 35 percent to 25 percent.

Fox Nation has come up with a lot of ludicrous attacks on President Obama, targeting Obama's religion and citizenship. But they may be hard-pressed to top this one. Fox Nation is hyping a story addressing alleged scars on Obama's head linking him to some kind of brain surgery.

Continuing its practice of shamelessly promoting and embracing controversial statements by Donald Trump, Fox Nation is hyping an interview Trump gave to Christian Broadcasting Network's (CBN) David Brody, in which he said that "[t]here's something" in the Quran "that teaches some very negative vibe" and defended the assertion that there is "a Muslim problem" in the United States.

The contortions the media arm of the Republican Party had to do on this one must have put them in traction:

Last week we got the not-surprising news that Glenn Beck is leaving Fox News. Much of the discussion about Beck's departure in the corporate media has revolved around what Beck will do without Fox, and what Fox will do without Beck. Not to worry: the worst of Beck's haunted imagination is securely woven into the Fox News dis-comforter. The trademark Fox invective, sophistry, and bias predate Glenn Beck and will outlive him.

On April 6th Fox News and Glenn Beck announced that his program would be "transitioning" off the air. Reminds me a little of when Charlie Sheen was transitioned off of Two and a Half Men. And so, as the chalk dust settles, it is time to look ahead.

But don't get too excited yet... in the wake of the cancellation, his media company, Mercury Radio Arts, and Fox can start a new venture in which Beck will be producing 'a variety of television projects' for the Fox Channel. Lifetime-style afterschool specials, perhaps?

In case you blinked and missed today's gathering of a few people in Washington D.C. that was billed as a tea party rally... Fox News was there, mostly to explain away the poor showing as the result of bad weather—after all, it was drizzling.

This is from a few days ago, but priceless nonetheless. Ignore for a moment the Fox correspondent who looks exactly like Anthony Teague as "Bud Frump" in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Concentrate instead, please, on the sign over his left shoulder, remembering that the Koch Brothers pronounce their name "Coke."

A new survey released by Public Policy Polling suggests self-described regular Fox News viewers favor former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee over other big Republican names believed to be mulling presidential campaigns for the next election cycle.

First, they hate any successful public sector - non-corporate venture. It flies in the face of radical conservative belief that the "private sector" always does things better.

Right-wing media figures are demagoguing an Obama Administration initiative to combat bullying and harassment, likening it to "big brother" and "Facebook stalking" of students. In fact, the initiative is an effort to assist schools and parents in preventing and dealing with bullying and harassment, which is estimated to affect as many as 13 million students each year.

In the 7 March issue of the Tribune, Mark Seddon reported on the threat that Glenn Beck, "as a sort of hired gauleiter on Fox News", poses to American democracy. The article hit the nail on the head when it comes to Beck's paranoiac propaganda. Seddon, however, misses the broader danger of the Murdoch-owned Fox News: the media outlet's audience is growing even as its programming veers away from broadcast journalism and shapes instead a rightwing political operation.

And in what may be the supreme example of conservative bias, Bill O'Reilly and Bernie Goldberg natter and gabble about NPRs "bias" as if that twerp O'Keefe actually did something worth talking about. It wasn't anything more than yet another dishonest, edited effort to bolster the right-wing agenda of killing all things public in favor of private concerns. No, O'Reilly and Goldberg just blather on without any regard for what really took place on those tapes, and what a non-story this whole thing should be.

Note to NPR: Quit apologizing for this. If someone lies and elicits statements that they then edit to make sound worse than it is, it hardly deserves you pulling out the sword and falling on it, over and over and over again. Knock it off. Step up and push back.

Glenn Beck has repeatedly used his Fox News show as a platform to villify labor unions, accusing unions of perpetuating violence, linking them to communists, likening union pensions to rape, accusing unions of wanting to destroy "the Western way of life," and claiming that unions are destroying children's education.

Many nuclear scientists, including some on Fox News, have warned that the consequences could be dire if the reactors are not brought under control.

Well, for starters let's stop telling the myth that we're in a post-racial America.  As far as I'm concerned there's just as much racism as there was 50-plus years ago.  Rev. Al Sharpton said it best at Rosa Parks' funeral: his generation and before had to deal with Jim Crow, but our generation has met his son James Crow, Esq.  They have the same DNA and the father has passed on the same amoral compass on to his son, but the son has a different outward appearance and no longer fits the quintessential image of a redneck from a rural southern town, but has expanded to include the Wall Street banker or the CEO of a company with racist hiring practices.

He still has numbers that just about any cable news host would envy and, with about two million viewers a night, outdraws all his competition combined.

Fox News frequently lambasts National Public Radio as a "bias[ed]," "defamatory" news outlet, and attacks have intensified of late because of the recent forced resignations of two of its top executives. However, Fox News parent company News Corp. appears to harbor a different view of NPR's value considering the media conglomerate's subsidiaries have donated at least $2 million to fund and sponsor the nonprofit organization.

Hoping to avoid the fate suffered by former Sen. Bob Bennett (R-UT), who fell at the hands of the Tea Party last year, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-OH) has been lurching conspicuously to the right. As Esquire noted recently, Hatch "is apparently going to spend the next two years trying to convince his base that the several times he's made sense since 1966 were completely accidental."

This afternoon, Hatch took his campaign to Twitter, lauding the "Great News Contributors" at Fox News, including Judge Andrew Napolitano:

For the fractious Tea Party movement, Beck—a former drive-time radio jockey, a recovering alcoholic, and a Mormon convert—has emerged as both a unifying figure and an intellectual guide. One opinion poll, released in July by Democracy Corps, showed that he is "the most highly regarded individual among Tea Party supporters," seen not merely as an entertainer, like Rush Limbaugh, but as an "educator." And in the past few months Beck has established his own institute of learning: the online, for-profit Beck University. Enrollees can take courses like Faith 102, which contends with "revisionists and secular progressives" about the separation of church and state; Hope 102, an attack on the activist federal government; and the combined Charity 101/102/103, a highly restrictive interpretation of rights, federalism, and the division of powers.

What goes around, eventually comes around. Just ask the insane hatemonger and purveyor of revisionist history, Fox News' once shining star, Glenn Beck. The loudmouth has managed to lose roughly a million viewers in one year. That's roughly 50% of his 2010 audience, and it seems that there's no end in sight to the decline.

Beck has only managed to reach 2 million viewers on three different occasions during the first month of this year — a monumental drop over his once large audience of potential 'progressive hunters.'

Take a look at the links I have provided below, then tell me truthfully if you can still consider Fox news to be truthful, and fair & balanced. I don't see how anyone could still believe that, but I'm sure that there are some of you out there that do.

Bill wants protesters to believe that they are making a mistake when they chant "Fox lies!" behind every Fox reporter.

Andrew Sullivan notes that a leaked manuscript of a proposed book by longtime Palin insider Frank Bailey contains some straight talk about Fox News and other conservative media:

"Isn't that what they do in socialist countries?"

Steve Doocy's question sounded like a spontaneous reaction to what he apparently saw as the threat Barack Obama would pose to freedom of the press.

It wasn't.

The Fox News host's inflammatory question had, in fact, been scripted the night before in an email sent by a Fox producer.

The incident, which occurred on the October 27, 2008, edition of Fox & Friends, came during what appears to have been a network-wide campaign to tie Obama to socialism in the month leading up to the presidential election. Internal Fox documents obtained by Media Matters and a review of the network's pre-election coverage show that Fox hosts, producers, and other journalists were involved in the effort.

Speaking about Beck, Soros told Zakaria, "I would be amused if people saw the joke in it," adding that he thinks Beck is "projecting" the views of Rupert Murdoch, who owns Fox News, and who Soros accused of "telling the people some falsehoods and leading the government in the wrong direction."

Soros said he thinks Fox News "has imported the methods of George Orwell, you know, newspeak, where you can tell the people falsehoods and deceive them."

The first credible poll of Egyptian public opinion since protests broke out on January 25th finds that just one measly percent of the population would vote for the Muslim Brotherhood's leaders in an open election. Yet that's the big 'danger of Arab democracy' over which our pasty pundits -- the lion's share of whom have never stepped foot in the country -- seem to obsess.

I know we're not supposed to compare good and decent Real Americans to Muslim extremists, but sometimes it's impossible to ignore the irony of the fact that the same people who are worried about Shari'ah law are trying to institute laws that make it legal to kill someone who endangers a fetus. It's true that they aren't proposing to stone them to death, but I suspec t that's just because they have so many guns at hand.

Seriously, these people are extremists and they are the tail that's wagging the Republican dog. If they weren't, the leadership of the GOP wouldn't be so afraid to insult them by pointing out that Obama is not, in fact, a Muslim.

Fox, which overtook CNN in January 2002, saw its overall audience drop 21 percent from January 2010, and an even larger 31 percent loss in the key A25-54 demographic from a year ago.

Blogger Andrew Breitbart has been sued by former U.S. Agriculture Department official Shirley Sherrod who contends her reputation was damaged by Breitbart's posting last year of an edited video. 

The New York Times reports today Breitbart was served with the lawsuit at CPAC Saturday. Sherrod contends in the suit that a video clip he posted last year "has damaged her reputation and prevented her from continuing her work."

It's been less than a month since the Arizona massacre. We've seen elected officials and pundits across the political spectrum come together in grief and (with the exception of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck) express a commitment to a more "civil" discourse. Incredibly, though not a surprise, calls for civility during the past month have gone ignored by Beck and his Fox News friends. Indeed, they seem to have responded to the shifting rhetorical climate by renewing their passion for vitriol.

On last night's The Ed Show on MSNBC (2-9-11), filmmaker Robert Greenwald (the founder of Brave New Films and the director of Outfoxed) joined host Ed Schultz in a discussion of how Fox News' disinformation and falsehoods damage U.S. political discourse and alter Americans' perceptions of reality.

Yeah, I know: it's in the White House. But I also know: it's Super Bowl Sunday, America's official Sacred Day of Rest for heterosexual males, including, presumably, the president himself. And for crissakes, it's an interview with Bill Freaking O'Reilly.

While income inequality in Egypt is more dangerous for its government, as the last two weeks of protests amply demonstrates, the fact is, it's  worse in the United States, as ThinkProgress's Pat Garofalo writes.

Personally, I find Bill O'Reilly to be annoying and arrogant so when I watch his interviews I find myself screaming expletives at my television – but that's just me. Heh.

I agree. I was surprised the see O'Reilly being nice at the beginning of the interview, but that sure didn't last long. Before you knew it, O'Reilly was back to being his normal jerk self.

Now that Jon Stewart has exposed the hypocrisy of Fox's attack on Steve Cohen for comparing Republican lies to Nazi propaganda, Bill O'Reilly is changing his tune yet again.

Initially, O'Reilly was outraged by Cohen's comments, saying Cohen "was absolutely over-the-top" for making the comparison. But then came Stewart's montage, showing that O'Reilly has repeatedly done the same thing as Cohen.

So how did O'Reilly react when presented with this obvious contradiction? Did he acknowledge that he might have been over the top as well? Nope. He justified his comparison.

Incredulous about Fox News host Megyn Kelly's claim that her network would never compare its opponents to Nazis, Jon Stewart opened his show last night by showing just how often that actually happens. (Hint: It's a lot).

Stewart challenged his staff to pull any clip of a Fox host comparing a political opponent to Nazis within 24 hours of Kelly's claim, confidently saying he would whip up "a delicious linzer tart" to fill the long time while his staff searched. Yet before Stewart even began his recipe, the show rolled a clip of Glenn Beck equating Democrats to Nazis -- a segment that aired only three hours after Kelly's show.

Last year, five potential Republican presidential candidates (Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, John Bolton, and Rick Santorum) who also serve as Fox News contributors or hosts appeared on the network for more than 85 hours. Media Matters for America estimates this time to be worth approximately $54.7 million in free advertising.

As its affiliated Republican Party's fortunes rose in the last year, Fox News' have declined. In January 2010, PPP showed Fox as by far the news outlet most trusted by American voters. In this month's poll, Fox is still relied on by more than some other competitors but is far behind PBS, tested for the first time. PBS is the only group trusted by a majority and distrusted by fewer than 40%.

One of the victims of the Arizona shooting today criticized the violent rhetoric employed by Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, and Fox News.

Eric Fuller, a 63-year-old Navy veteran who was shot in the knee and received fragments in the back last Saturday, said the rhetoric of Sarah Palin and others can impact "demented" people like suspect Jared Loughner.

Fuller, who said he has been interviewed by several national news outlets, added he would not appear on Fox News if they sought him, predicting it "might develop into a screaming session." He added: "I don't like what they're selling."

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords had been a target long before an assassination attempt that left six dead and fourteen wounded. In 2010, her congressional office in Tucson was vandalized soon after an Alabama militiameister called for Democratic Party windows to broken, as Mother Jones journalist James Ridgeway recalled. A gun was dropped at a Douglas, Arizona town hall meeting on health care reform Giffords held in August 2009. Sarah Palin targeted her district with a gun sight cross hairs (err, landscaping symbol) during the last election cycle. (Robert DePugh's 1960s-era Minutemen used to send their opponents a set of crosshairs in the mail, with an ominous 'We Are Watching You" business card.) Asked who his daughter's enemies were, Giffords' father identified "the whole Tea Party."

The study wasn't intended to be concerned with where people got their information, just how accurate it seemed. But the researchers noticed a peculiar thing: Although some Americans were misinformed, they generally became more informed if they consumed more news — with one major exception.

The study found that the more people watched Fox News, the less informed they became.

From a lay person's point of view, yes, there's a lot to suggest and extremely disturbed individual, starting with the fact that mentally stable people don't shoot up crowds of people. But what Steve says:

But what rankles here is Rand Paul's comfort with offering his "medical point of view" on national television. With due respect to the freshman senator, he's a self-accredited ophthalmologist. He's worked as a medical professional, but has treated patients' eyes not their mental health, and as best as I can tell, he has no background as a psychiatrist.
Rand Paul, in other words, isn't qualified to diagnose mental disorders by reading some stuff on the Internet. He shouldn't pretend otherwise.

The Russian playwright Anton Chekhov had a rule: if you show a gun in the first act, by the time the curtain falls, it has to go off. Hours after the shooting, Fox News — which employs Palin — aired scenes from a vigil in Phoenix, but when one mourner appeared to began to call out Palin's incendiary rhetoric, the Fox feed abruptly went to commercial. What's so curious is that it's hard to find almost any Republican concern about employment homicide during 2008, when George W. Bush was president and the economy was shedding 4.4 million jobs. Given the lag with which economic policy works, the biggest net job loss that could credibly be assigned to Obama during his two years in office would be less than a million.

Steve Doocy went so far as to say the "Democratic House killed" the bill in July, without noting that it was Republicans that blocked passage -- and that it was Dems who ultimately got the bill through the chamber.

On Friday, the Los Angeles Times broke a taboo of sorts among mainstream news organizations by urging Fox News to "crack down on... partisanship in its news ranks" or "stop pretending to be an objective news source."

The Blogosphere was having a lot of fun this week with the so-called Fox "News" Channel. This after a scientific study proved that so-called Fox "News" viewers were the least informed. When asked about the study, senior VP Michael Clemente also proved why the so-called Fox "News" audience is the least informed: He lied to the so-called librul NYT.
