Anti-gun violence activists in the U.S. are renewing their push for new gun laws in the wake of the revelation that the alleged Norway shooter claims to have purchased high-capacity ammunition magazines from a United States retailer.

Firearm homicide is the second leading cause of injury death among youths aged 10 to 19, according to the latest data from the CDC.

The findings are published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

From 2006 to 2007, firearm homicide rates in large urban areas in the U.S. were 5.2 per 100,000 people per year. By contrast, the national rate was 4.2 firearm homicide deaths per 100,000 people per year.

Firearm homicide and firearm suicide rates were the fourth and fifth leading cause of injury-related deaths in the U.S, respectively, during this time frame.

The Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point, Kentucky advertises its World Famous, twice-a-year Machine Gun Shoot as "Family Friendly" entertainment. The slogan: "Nothing brings families together like blowing stuff apart...safely."

It is probably not much of a stretch to suggest that if the National Rifle Association's Marion Hammer, the Lady Macbeth of Tallahassee, wanted the Florida Legislature to require every citizen to own a gun, it wouldn't be long before nuns would be forced to pack Tech-9s along with their rosary beads.

There are reasons why Hammer regards the Legislature as her personal bonbon box of happily willing factotums. Law and order sells. Crime sells. And fear never goes out of fashion. So it is understandable that Hammer's compliant charm bracelet of pols are ready to accommodate the NRA's desire to allow anyone who possesses a concealed weapons permit to openly carry firearms in public.

Seems to me that simple, clear communication works best, even with young kids. In what is I am sure a surprise to nobody, it turns out that guns are still being sold illegally at gun shows, even after the attempted political assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords that left 6 dead, including a 9-year old, a federal judge and a member of her staff.

Lockheed Martin has been the leader in deals worth $3.8 billion over that period of the last 10 years; General Dynamics, $2.5 billion for tanks; Boeing, $1.7 billion for missiles, for helicopters; Raytheon for all manner of missiles for the armed forces. So, basically, this is a key element in propping up the regime, but a lot of the money, as you said and Juan Cole mentioned on this program, is basically recycled. Taxpayers could just as easily be giving it directly to Lockheed Martin or General Dynamics.

In the wake of the shootings in Tucson, the familiar questions inevitably resurfaced: Are communities where more people carry guns safer or less safe? Does the availability of high-capacity magazines increase deaths? Do more rigorous background checks make a difference?

The reality is that even these and other basic questions cannot be fully answered, because not enough research has been done. And there is a reason for that. Scientists in the field and former officials with the government agency that used to finance the great bulk of this research say the influence of the National Rife Association has all but choked off money for such work.

To lure repeat buyers, increased lethality has become the nicotine of the firearms industry. Every year gun makers roll out new lines of assault rifles, tactical shotguns and handguns that hold even more bullets, or fire even faster, or boast new gadgetry that supposedly enables their user to kill other human beings more efficiently than ever before.

-Age limits that bar people younger than 21 from buying or owning guns.

-Lockbox and trigger-lock requirements to keep guns away from children.

-One-gun-a-month purchase limits in California, Maryland, New Jersey and Virginia.

-Georgia's prohibition on carrying guns into churches.

-Bans on guns in bars.

-California's outlawing of certain handguns.

-Assault weapons and ammunition bans.

-Federal and state prohibitions aimed at keeping domestic violence offenders from having guns.

It's our right and liberty to bear arms, but what happens when guns are used for crimes?

Reports from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms show more guns sold in Georgia are ending up at crime scenes than those sold in any other state.

SPIRIT LAKE -- Two Idaho men are in jail accused of making grenades and keeping an illegal arsenal of guns and ammo.
