Hello,
I've been lurking for a while, but this is my first post. We finally complete the purchase of, and move into, our new house on Thursday (4 days), and I've followed the MSE guide to find out our best deal on Gas/Elec from the switching sites (energyhelpline and simplyswitch). BUT...the switching sites seem to only have automated options for switching from a current provider, not for starting a new account at a new home, with the expectation that this will take 20 days or more. I could call the callcenter, but with simplyswitch that means no MSE £35 Amazon rewards, although energyhelpline seem to still give the £15 cashback if you use the callcentre.
So I think I have two options: either call the switching site's helpline (and only get £15 not £30 back), or just go direct to the new supplier (Scottish Power online saver).
Does anyone have experience with doing any of this (and any potential pitfalls), or can suggest another option?
many thanks,
Kate

I posted this question over in the Elec & Gas forum (I'm too new to post a link, sorry - the title is "Moving into new house, want new supplier, but T&C's seem to say must use old supplier ")

To summarise:
- if you have an existing supplier, you should be able to get them to transfer your account to your new house from the day you move
- if (like us) you have broken your chain and are in temporary accomodation, so don't have an existing supplier of your own, then you will have to start off with whoever is supplying the house, and then switch if necessary. The switch will take 4-6 weeks, whereas exchange/completion is typically 1-4 weeks, so it is worth arranging your switch as soon as you have exchanged contracts, to minimise the time on the higher tarriff

In the context of house buying expenses, it's not a lot of money, but I'm still irritated.

Mine's a very similar position, no gas at the property (well it MAY have a gas pipe, but it's capped off, with no meter) No-one will tell me how much it will cost to get it re-instated because i'm not the home-owner. I don't understand why this should be top secret stuff!

The only thing i was told is that it will take appx 9 weeks to be re-connected!

They don't make things easy do they?
