1p 500g boxes of Thorntons. Can you find 'em?Usually 14 for the large 499g selection box

While stocks last

MSE update Thu 6 Jun: Tesco has still not confirmed this offer with us. Currently, we're hearing of MoneySavers hunting for cheap chocolates with mixed success. Let us know on our 1p Thorntons chocolates forum thread if you were successful (or not).

Big chocolates for 1p? Say it isn't so! Well, we think it's so. It's not guaranteed, but we're hearing of some successes.

This looks like a Tesco price glitch, it feels like a Tesco price glitch, but it probably isn't. Read on for why.

How do I get them?

It's pretty simple. Pop into your local Tesco Express and take a look for Thorntons Classic 499g chocolates, which usually cost 13.99 (most seem to have hearts on the box).

Importantly, they're not marked as costing a penny. Some people say they've been marked as discontinued, while others found them at full price.

You'll need to scan them at a checkout to see if they're reduced for you. It could be choccy-woccily fantastic if you do. Please let us know if you find any in our new 1p Thorntons chocolates at Tesco forum thread.

Yet of course, there's no guarantees here, so don't waste petrol on a special effort. We went to two local stores in west London with no luck.

Is this for real?

Sadly we're waiting for Tesco to get back and confirm this (frustratingly it's press office hasn't bothered to return our calls - it seems every little doesn't want to help).

This isn't the first time we've seen 1p things at Tesco - we've reported a mass of giant Toblerones at 1p each before.

Last time we asked Tesco, it told us they were Christmas unsolds.

"Once the festive season is over, we gradually reduce the price until all the stock is sold. We always aim to offer great value, and if customers are lucky enough to find these products still in stock, they really are a bargain.

So our bet is these chocolates are likely to be from Easter or Valentine's Day.

MSE Deborah says:

Simply Tap is a relatively new app so we have little feedback on it. The app was launched by Mobile Money Network ltd, which Visa Europe has a 15% stake in, and has former M&S chief Stuart Rose as chairman.

For those worried about entering card details, on security it says We use the same secure platform as the UK's leading high street banks. Your details are never saved in the app but hosted on a secure server using bank level encryption. Plus it will log you out of the app after a while and request your card security number before you make any purchases.

Simply Tap has run a few good offers before but these tend to be for new registrants. So bear in mind you may not be able to get future offers if you grab this one.

Free protection for all shopping!Section 75

There's a secret phrase that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. "Section 75" laws means your plastic must protect anything you buy over 100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust you can still get your money back.

Although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards there is something else to fall back on if you paid on a Visa debit or electron card, or Visa credit card under 100 (otherwise go for Section 75). Known as Visa Chargeback, this is part of Visa's internal rules and not a legal requirement. Full details of Section 75, chargeback and how to claim in the Section 75 Refunds guide.

If you know of a great deal we've missed, or you have feedback on those above, then please post it in the discussion and we'll add it to the list.
