Renting - Pigeon stuck in chimney!

We seem to have a Pigeon or some bird stuck in the chimney of our rental. It's got a fitted electric fire so no access up the chimney. Who's responsible to get this removed myself or the Landlord?

Call the RSPCA, I'd expect it to be free.

The only action required is a letter to the LL advising him to fit a cage to the top of the chimney to stop it happening again.

Pigeon is a goner.

a) rise and
b) not last long

Would you be so concerned if it was a rat that died there? Pigeons are as much vermin as they are.

A few weeks ago my work colleagues and I noticed a pigeon stuck in a tree outside our office.

We weren't sure at first whether it was alive, and whether what looked like the occasional fluttering of its wings was caused by the wind, but eventually we concluded that the poor thing WAS alive and attached to a branch by a piece of wire or cable round one wing.

I called the RSPCA and was very impressed by the dedication of the inspector to rescuing a creature which some people might regard as vermin; although in the end, because of the height of the tree, the thickness of branches preventing the fire service getting a ladder to it and the difficulty of vehicle access for a specialist rescue appliance it couldn't be saved.

A call to the RSPCA, if its not too late, might just reap dividends for the poor bird in your case.

You would like it where I live, I have had a guy standing in my garden uninvited, blowing the squirrels out of our tree with a shotgun!

I had a crow stuck up (down?) the chimney a few weeks ago. Nothing much you can do, other than to get a sweep out and try to push it up and out. Although there's just as much chance that it'll fall down and into the living room.

Not an option if there's no access to the chimney though.

Not sure that the RSPCA would be able to do much, if the chimney's blocked from below.

It might seem cruel, but if it can't be rescued, then there's not a lot you can do. That's life, I'm afraid - you can only do what you can do.

Chimney sweep won't come out unless there's access to the open hole - they won't disconnect a gas or electric fire.

If it was a gas fire you'd have to get a GasSafe registered person round to disconnect the fire, pull it out, the reconnect it after the bird is free.

Not sure on the legalities with an electric fire - not sure if you have to use a Part P electrician or whether you can DIY it (if confident).

We had a bird fall down our chimney a couple of years ago. Had to get a gas engineer to take the fire out and put it back afterwards. Thankfully the bird flew straight out and out of the open window, without pooping once in our lounge! Gas guy only charged us �30 - not bad considering our regular guy wasn't about so I had to get an emergency call-out person from the Yellow Pages.

Afterwards we had a bird guard fitted to the top of the chimney so it can't happen again.

so to those accusing respondants as uncaring, just how would RSPCA or fire brigade get it out? Options perhaps:

* rip out fire, open up fireplace, get sweep round and push up
* lower a loop of rope/wire down fro above, hook round pigeon's head, and pull up

i'd be concerned if it was any living thing quite frankly ( and this is coming from someone who had a squirrel stuck in the ventilation flue above the stove extractor fan! - and yes, we went to the effort go remove the appliance etc,and free the grateful animal.)
